Grand National - At The Races

Four for the National: Zoey Bird

TIGER ROLL has become one of National Hunt racing’s most loved horses and you can see why; winning four times at the Cheltenham Festival and of course last year’s Grand National. On the strength of his form, his popularity and the fact he’s trained by two-time National-winning trainer Gordon Elliott, he will possibly go off the shortest price favourite in over a hundred years! Too short for me but I can see him running another massive race again, even though he’s carrying another 6lb!

Like Tiger Roll, ANIBALE FLY is another classy Irish-trained raider who comes into the race with excellent recent form having been placed in the Gold Cup for a 2nd time. Trained by Tony Martin this nine-year-old ran an excellent 4th in the Grand National last year off of 11st 8lb, and is set to carry just 2lb more this time round. Though he ran a blinder in the Gold Cup, I think that was a bonus, as this has always been the main aim and he’s my idea of the winner.

JURY DUTY is another representing dual National-winning trainer Gordon Elliott and is vying to compete the American and English Grand National double, which won’t have been done before! He’s run once since that trip to Far Hills and that was a really impressive win at Down Royal where having been held up he stayed on nicely for a comfortable win under top weight. If he takes to Aintree and there’s every chance he will, I think he’ll be in the frame off a low weight.

RAMSES DE TEILLEE is a really likeable young stayer who doesn’t know how to run a bad race, except maybe at Cheltenham. By contrast he adores Chepstow and posted a career best when he was 2nd to Elegant Escape in the Welsh National. Then he just got out-speeded at Haycock last time by Robinsfirth in the Grand National trial. With youth and a low weight on his side, this grey has a lot going for him. I can see him running a place for his trainer David Pipe who won this with Comply Or Die in 2008.
